Water thefts already occuring
It seems a bit premature for this, but 11Alive has a story of a DeKalb business that was getting water stolen from one of their outside faucets.
Apparently, trucks with water tanks would park outside of Gary’s Auto Shop on the weekends and fill up using water from their front faucet.
At this point, I can’t figure out what the motive is. Water prices haven’t gone up (though they should) and no one has run out yet. I certainly expect we’ll see more of this in the coming months, but I’m surprised to see it happening already.

But… why?
I mean, filling a water truck with a GARDEN HOSE has to be the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard. And the price of water isn’t high enough for it to be a valuable commodity.
The only thing I can think of is that someone wants to not have to worry about conserving, but doesn’t want the water company to question why they’re using so much water.
But… still. When water rationing happens in Atlanta, I’ll expect this. But now? This is a dumb criminal and a dumb crime.

There are people who just don’t see a problem with that sort of thing. A couple years ago one of our neighbors was using our outside faucet to shower with in our backyard. I confronted him about it and his only response was “water’s expensive”. I didn’t know what to say to him, all I did was get a lock to put on the faucet so he couldn’t use it again.
Until the person is caught and interrogated, who knows what the motivation is.

My guess is, these truck drivers might be preparing to bugout (making a retreat or flight to a safe area during a crisis) from the GA area by making sure they have plenty of water stored at their retreat (safe location during an economic crash, disaster, or war). These folks might even be paranoid about data collection, in that the Dept. of Homeland Security might notice someone suddenly using thousands of gallons of water a month at a residence. They don’t want to draw attention. A drought is not the only impending disaster in 2008 coming up. A law-abidding citizen concerned about this would not be stealing water, though…

The water trucks could be stealing the water to transport it to small isolated communities, that have severe water shortage, like that town in Tennessee.
