Chris George Carlos to cut his water usage

After all of the outrage about the house in Cobb County that used 440,000 gallons of water in October, the owner has said he plans to drastically cut his usage.

According to the AJC, his usage for the past week has been about 2,000 gallons a day, which would be around 60,000 gallons a month.  That’s still very high, but it’s far better than the 440,000 from last month.

As many people suggested, it sounds like he had indeed been watering his lawn.  These two snippets from the article seem to confirm that.

First, we have this:  “He was very humble. It is my understanding he told his landscaper to stop all watering last week,” said County Spokesman Robert Quigley, who called Carlos.

Last week?  He shouldn’t have been watering at that point.  Also, the article says “Carlos was not doing anything illegal before Cobb limited outdoor watering on Sept. 20.“  That implies that he might have been doing things that were illegal after Sept. 20.

That still doesn’t explain where all of the water was going, but it’s nice to see he’s cutting back.

  1. Doc Says:

Almost half a million gallons of water wasted on some suburbanite’s lawn, and “he wasn’t doing anything illegal”.

Meanwhile, I’ve been limiting my showers, spending money making sure all of my toilets and faucets were tight, avoiding washing my car, and generally trying to figure out everything I could do to squeeze out a litle more conservation. I’ve been doing that sort of thing since June. I live in Gainesville, and I can see Lake Lanier drying up daily.

Excuse me for being uncivil, but this type of idiocy cannot be enabled. The information that Georgia was in a drought has been at the top of the news for literally months. I don’t care if this person was “humble” or managed to cut his consumption down to merely 10 times the average for most people. He needs to be investigated, prosecuted if appropriate, and he needs to do some form of serious restitution.

Currently my water is being “rationed”. Use over the 5,000gal/mo allowed and you start paying steep fines. Investigation as to what kind of business is he running out of that property that uses that kind of water. He ain’t just watering the lawn and flushing the toilet. Smells fishy to me.

He’s growing weed in that mansion.

  4. kate Says:

Yes-Gale! I have three kids and we use 7,000gal a month.

  5. Jim Says:

Just a hunch - but I would bet he is using water for air conditioning. AC units that can be used with geothermal systems work nicely from domestic water. It should not be allowed, and in NYC it is illegal, but there are municipalities that allow it, and I would guess some that aren’t even aware of the potential.
It can also be used for heating (yes, you can get heat out of 55 degree water!)

Did ya’ll not see the pic on the news of his home’s huge waterfall???

Most homes with water features constantly recyle the water. Apparently he doesn’t.

Humble my foot. They need to just cut off his water altogether for a few months as punishment

  7. Ryan Says:

440,000 gallons a month equates to just over 10 gallons per minute. Constantly. Enough for 10 tons of air conditioning running 1/3 of the time, plus a little bit for evaporation from the waterfall, and an occaisional toilet flush - hmmmmmmmmmmm
I don’t think weed requires that much water, John.

  8. Paul Says:

If he would stop using water completely for 312 years, the emptying of the lake could be delayed by a day.

  9. notanumber Says:

Ryan, a sizable group of indoor hydroponic beds growing “weed” would require at least half the total water usage reported. Of course with the size of the house, the hydroponics could be huge.

This graph from the AJC article is so like Scarface, “Carlos has not responded to repeated interview requests, made by telephone and at the intercom of his gated home.”

If someone gets behind Carlos’ gate do they meet his “little friend”?

  11. Livvy Says:

They should cut this guys water usage. Just because he pays for the water doesn’t mean he should have an unlimited supply at the cost of all the little people. I’m pretty sure if he got a well dug he would have a pretty good water supply. I live in Augusta and they are wanting to take our water, which is running low as well, but until Atlanta stops all these people (I doubt he is the only one using crazy amounts of water) who are wasteful they shouldn’t be looking to take other areas water supply.

    Cut off his water!

My full service commercial car wash in Smyrna washes over 4,000 vehicles a month and the total water I need to make that possible is less than 200,000 gallons a month…and at least 50% of that is recycled! What is this numbnutz doing with all that water?

To help with the water crisis, I have done the following:

Professional Car Wash in Smyrna goes WATERLESS to conserve our precious resource. Car-Nutz Auto Spa, Inc. is proud to announce our “waterless” car wash option which we are giving our customers who would like to help conserve water. The results of the process we have developed are indistinguishable from a traditional “wet” wash. Please visit us at 2543 Spring RD SE Smyrna, GA 30080 to see this service in action or visit http://www.carnutzautospa.com for more information. email Cleve Meredith at clevejr@gmail.com

I think he is bottling the water to sell when it all runs out. Isn’t he in the liquor business or something? Water will sell like liquor soon.

  14. Jdog Says:

He was skirting the landscaping rules by having continuing planting on his property. If everythings always new, everything is allowed to get watered!

  15. tom Says:

Chris Carlos is a co-owner of National Distributing Company–they sell wine and liquor to restaurants you eat at–then he pokes you in the eye!
Boycott National Distributing Company and show this family who is boss…..

  16. Luke Norris Says:

I use to clean their swimming pool. The last time I was at the Carlos home it was off Powers Ferry Road in Buckhead. I don’t think they’ve moved. I still see the same cars in the driveway. Now I know they are rich enough to have two houses. But I am sure if they had more than one house I’d be cleaning both.
