A few more restrictions in Cobb County
Along with the new $50-$100 rebates on low-flow toilets, Cobb County passed a few other new rules last night.
- Car dealers will no longer be allowed to wash vehicles on-site unless they have a system that uses recycled water. Of course, having a dirty car can be seen as a badge of honor around here lately.
- Pressure washing for “beautification purposes” and for parking lots is now forbidden. However, it is still allowed if needed for health or safety reasons.
- Landscapers are now given 15 days (instead of 30) to water new plants.
Those all seem like very reasonable moves. I still fear for landscapers in the next few months, but this seems like a good compromise and a way to avoid the flip-flopping that they’ve had in Alpharetta.

I have a few friends who were until recently employed at car dealerships as car detailers. Due to the water restrictions and drought, they are now unemployed. I know this is true at about 4 dealerships because they don’t have a water recycling system. It’s sad and I wish so many people weren’t stuck looking for jobs…the ones that some of them qualify for are the jobs hindered most with the water restrictions.

This is one of the hard things about the drought, and I still don’t know which side I’m on. On one hand, I hate to see anyone lose their jobs. On the other hand, I think all of that kind of watering (car washes, professional landscaping, etc) should be completely banned in all of north Georgia.
I’ve heard good arguments for both sides and I just don’t know which side I’m on anymore.
The right answer will only come after it’s all done. We’ll either say:
1 - “We got all of this rain and we’re fine. We could have gotten by without cutting those jobs.” Or…
2 - “We’re completely out of water now. Why on earth did we let the car washes keep operating for so long?”
